Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
A 15-year-old boy, Mihir Ahammed, from Ernakulam, Kerala, tragically took his own life on January 15, following a prolonged period of severe bullying and racism at school. Mihir, a student at Global Public School in Thiruvaniyoor, jumped from the 26th floor of his apartment building, shortly after returning home from school that day.
Mihir's mother, Rajna PM, detailed the abuse her son faced in a social media post, claiming that Mihir was repeatedly subjected to physical and verbal bullying. Rajna revealed that on Mihir’s last day, he was forced by his peers to lick a toilet seat and had his head shoved into a toilet while it was flushed. She stated that these acts of abuse were not isolated but part of a consistent pattern of harassment over an extended period.
In the aftermath of Mihir’s death, Rajna and her husband sought answers by speaking with Mihir’s friends and schoolmates and reviewing his social media messages. Through these conversations, they learned that Mihir had been the target of a group of students who subjected him to physical assaults, verbal abuse, and racial slurs. According to Rajna, Mihir was specifically bullied for his skin color, which worsened his emotional distress.
The bullying, as detailed by Rajna, included physical violence and cruel verbal insults. She shared that Mihir was made to play humiliating games and endure cruel treatment on the school bus. Some of the bullying was racially charged, with Mihir’s skin color being a frequent source of taunts. Rajna stated that despite the trauma Mihir endured, the abuse continued up until his final day.
Following Mihir's death, Rajna filed a complaint and an FIR at Hill Palace Police Station in Thrippunithura, Ernakulam. The family has also submitted a petition to the Chief Minister’s Office and the Director General of Police, requesting a thorough and impartial investigation into the events that led to Mihir's tragic decision. Rajna expressed concern that digital evidence, such as messages and chat screenshots, could be deleted, which might hinder the investigation.
The family is demanding justice for Mihir, calling for strict action against those responsible for the bullying and racism. They are urging authorities to investigate the role of the school in handling bullying complaints. Rajna has stated that despite presenting evidence to school authorities, no significant action was taken, and she believes the school may have tried to suppress the truth to protect its image. She is now seeking accountability and a wider examination of the institutional response to bullying and racism in schools.
